An evening at the Hollywood Bowl

Ok, so after Jeff and I got back home from ComiCon, my brother and I met up with my dad and Sue to go see Thievery Corporation and The Flaming Lips at the Hollywood Bowl.

The opening band was Os Mutantes, they are from Brazil, they were OK, definitely an opening band.

The second group was Thievery Corporation. They were really good, not much to watch since most of the instruments are stationary. Though I think it would have been cool if the sitar player had strapped that puppy on and danced with the bass player, who was the only person really moving around. This is a short clip I found, this song was on the Garden State Soundtrack.

The last group was The Flaming Lips. Didn't really know what to expect from this band. They start their set and the singer comes out in a big bubble and walks around a bit then a bunch of aliens come out on the left side and a bunch of santas come out on the right side, along with 10-15 alien/mermaids with painted on bikini tops. And they had about 25 cameras and a bunch of microphones around the audience because they were recording everything for the 5.1 DVD that will be coming out in like 9 months. So this show got a little nuts. They brought out a bunch of 3 foot balloons and were firing streamers and confetti into the crowd, then to make things crazier the singer had all of the lights turned off in the Bowl so we could see all of the glowing necklaces that everyone was given as they came in and the glow sticks that were thrown out by the topless alien-mermaids earlier during the Thievery set. That looked really cool, 17000+ people with glowing things waving them around. Then he told us to get them all up front, hmm waitaminit does he mean throw them?...YES he does. And for the next 10 minutes 17,000+ glowing necklaces and a bunch of glowsticks went flying! We were sitting close enough that we could hit the stage with the glowing things, also close enough to be hit by things coming from behind us. It was INSANE!!! Here is a clip that gives a small glimpse into how pretty much the whole set went.

Also they did a pretty cool encore of War Pigs by Black Sabbath. Sorry the video qualities were not that great they were taken by phone or digital camera. Yes I will be buying the DVD when it comes out, I really want to see how they edit it and make it seem like everybody was going nuts, the singer had to ask several times for the crowd to cheer/sing louder.

The seats we had were almost too close, it got hard to see everything that was going on. Sound was really good, except for one of the midrange drivers on the right side crackling and trying to die. Overall it was a really good show, it was worth what we paid for the tickets. Oh and if any of you go see a show at the Bowl pay for the preferred parking when you buy your tickets, seriously, you only have to wait like 10-20 minutes to get out of the parking lot and onto the freeway, regular parking can be waiting up to an hour plus, it's stacked parking if the guy near the front wants to hangout you're going to hangout too.

Thats all for now, I'll bring another Hollywood Bowl concert report sometime after the Herbie Hancock show on August 9th.
